Marcie Campbell

Dr. Marcie Campbell is an Assistant Professor and Director of Research and Grants for the Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Kinesiology from Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas. She earned her Occupational Therapy Doctorate from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, focusing on the neurological evaluation of pediatric patients with complex movement disorders. 

Before her education and professional experiences in occupational therapy, she worked with children in various capacities and settings for many years. As a licensed occupational therapist, she has clinical experience in numerous settings, including pediatric occupational therapy in inpatient rehabilitation at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas; outpatient therapy for the Autism Treatment Center in Fort Worth, Texas; home health in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex; and school-based practice at Grand Prairie Independent School District. 

While a pediatric occupational therapist at Grand Prairie Independent School District, Dr. Campbell helped develop, acquire and oversee grants from the Texas Education Agency for Innovative Services for Students with Autism, totaling $4.7 million. She created a Sensory-Motor Support Specialist certification for teachers and paraprofessionals to learn the foundations of development and how to support students with unique sensory and motor needs. This program also incorporated a sensory-motor curriculum and dedicated spaces in the special education classrooms with sensory tools and equipment to meet students' needs. She has experience in curriculum writing, program development, and building sensory and motor lab spaces for campuses as well as for a transition center for the district. In addition, she served as a mentor for new occupational therapy team members and fieldwork students. 

Dr. Campbell is passionate about innovation, community engagement, education, diversity, equity, and inclusion. She seeks innovation in all areas of practice and promotes research to expand evidence-based practice. Her passion for community engagement includes a desire to support families of children with special needs. Some initiatives she has developed include partnerships with local government departments and school districts to host special events and training for parents and community members. Her passion for educating the next generation of occupational therapists is evident in her mentorship, and she has published research on professional behavior expectations for occupational therapy students. Finally, Dr. Campbell is passionate about diversity, equity and inclusion and has presented on cultural considerations and trauma-informed care at the district and regional levels. 

Dr. Campbell is a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association and the Texas Occupational Therapy Association. In addition, she is the representative for the Committee on Legislative and Political Affairs for the Alamo South District of the Texas Occupational Therapy Association. 

As the Director of Research and Grants for the University of Incarnate Word Occupational Therapy Program, she has led the development and application of two large grants as the primary investigator. The first is with the Frost/Pryor foundation for specialized equipment for $150,000. The second is with the Department of Education for mental health services in high need school districts for $5,000,000 over five years.
