Members of the University of the Incarnate Word community joined thousands of attendees Monday, Jan. 19, for the city’s 39th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. March, one of the largest commemorative marches in the country. Students, faculty, staff and alumni represented UIW along the route as the community gathered to honor the legacy of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In April 2025, the Teacher Education program was approved to offer a full-year Teacher Residency as part of an enhanced certification residency pathway. The residency allows UIW Teacher Education students to be paired with experienced teachers from Northwood Elementary to be mentored for a complete academic year. The residency’s first cohort of participating students began in August of 2025 for the 2025-2026 school year. In May 2026, cohort members Kaitlyn Weightman and Hope Fuschetto will be the first UIW students to complete the program and graduate.

The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) proudly announces the re-launch of its Dietetic Internship Program, now under the direction of Dagny Larson, PhD, RD, LD. This innovative program offers a 9-month, community-focused internship beginning every August, designed to train future registered dietitians with a strong foundation in sustainability and diverse practice settings. Interns will complete two graduate-level courses that prepare them for supervised practice and provide dedicated time for RD exam preparation.

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) celebrated veteran and military-connected student doctors at the annual Military Match Day ceremony on the UIWSOM campus. As soon-to-be doctors, many of UIWSOM’s military-affiliated students have applied to medical residencies and other post-graduation programs, awaiting word as to where in the country they will go and what specialties they will practice.
December brings both the close of the academic year and the anticipation of the Christmas season. At the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), it also marks a time of celebration as the University recognizes a new class of graduates preparing to take flight beyond the Nest. Prior to the Fall Class of 2025 Commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 13, several events were held to commemorate the students’ achievement.
On Monday, Dec. 8, a bold new alliance of four innovative universities was officially commemorated at the UIW Broadway campus. Dubbed CHARISM: Catholic Higher Education Alliance of Rising Institutions in Service and Mission, the alliance brings together the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), Dominican University, University of Mount Saint Vincent and Universidad del Sagrado Corazón to provide exciting new opportunities to its students.
Today, the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions continues its mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word, through the educational preparation of health professionals. One of these remarkable health professionals is Fall 2025 graduate Elizabeth Yvonne Gonzalez.
UIW and its Military and Veteran Center (MVC) remain dedicated to ensuring students have the resources and encouragement they need to thrive. Gilbert Laurino, a U.S. Army veteran with three deployments, is among the Fall 2025 graduates who will cross the Commencement stage on Saturday, Dec. 13.
The UIW School of Media and Design’s fashion program has the privilege of educating visionary creatives who have a passion for designing, crafting and merchandising the next influential styles. With concentrations including Merchandising and Apparel Production and Design, students in these specializations immerse themselves in the knowledge necessary to succeed in various fashion-related career paths. One of these remarkable Fashion students is Fall 2025 graduate and Fashion Merchandising major Daniel “Dan” Williams.
In a recent Apostolic Letter titled Drawing New Maps of Hope, Pope Leo writes that we live in a complex, fragmented, digitized educational environment. But that, since its origins, the Gospel has generated “educational constellations.” Pope Leo observes, “In stormy weather, they have been a lifeline; in calm weather, they have been a sail unfurled. A beacon in the night to guide navigation.”
On Saturday, Nov. 22, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) hosted its 39th annual Light the Way Holiday Festival, presented by H-E-B, and sponsored by KSAT 12, Spectrum Reach and Perry Homes. The event welcomed thousands of guests to the Broadway campus for a day filled with festive fun as UIW ushered in the Christmas season.
The University Roundtable is an organization that seeks to “explore creative, challenging and controversial issues.” The San Antonio chapter of this organization notably has ties to the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), as former 1973-1990 Incarnate Word Board of Trustees President Dr. Amy Freeman Lee aided in its establishment in 1980.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that it has, once again, been ranked the No. 1 university in the nation by Military Times in its 2025 “Best for Vets: Colleges” list. This marks the third consecutive year that UIW has received the No. 1 ranking from the national publication.
One of my favorite images regarding the spirit of Advent is “standing on tiptoe.” I got this image while reading Sr. Macrina Wiederkehr, OSB’s book, Seasons of Your Heart. “In spite of all the brokenness of our lives, we are still standing on tiptoe,” Sr. Macrina writes, “waiting for the glorious freedom promised us as children of God. This confident waiting is called hope, and our lives are empty without it.”

November 18, 2025 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is pleased to announce that Dr. Stephanie Schmiedecke Barbieri has been appointed as the new Dean of the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO).
Michelle Casares, a doctoral candidate in the Dreeben School of Education at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), traveled to Brazil to present her research at the combined inaugural International Conference on Social Technologies of Memory and the 12th International Digital Storytelling Conference.
This week (Monday, Nov. 17 – Friday, Nov. 21), UIW celebrated International Education Week (IEW) on the Broadway campus. According to the U.S. Department of Education, “IEW is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and to attract future leaders from abroad to study in the United States” (ed.gov).
On Saturday, Nov. 1, student doctors from all five health professions schools gathered at the UIWSOM campus for the inaugural Health Profession Olympics. This first-time event invited students to a day of Olympics-style activities and challenges that allowed them to showcase their sportsmanship.
On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) community gathered for the President’s Posada, an annual event hosted by UIW President Dr. Thomas Evans and his wife, Mrs. Lisa Evans. Coordinated by the UIW Campus Life team, the celebration brings together University leadership, staff, students and the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) to share a festive meal and embrace the spirit of the holiday season.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, veterans both from the Nest and beyond were honored at UIW’s 23rd annual Veterans Day ceremony in the Joeris Ballroom. UIW leadership, staff, students, Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and more gathered to honor the years of service given and the legacies of those who have served our nation.
On Wednesday, Nov. 12, a celebration for the 250th birthday of 18th century novelist Jane Austen was hosted on the Broadway campus. This event was specially planned and coordinated by students from the Romantics class, taught by Associate Professor of English Dr. LuElla D’amico. Having learned much about the career, life and legacy of Austen, the students wished to share their knowledge with the UIW community.

The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that UIW Campus Bajío is celebrating its ten-year anniversary this year. Campus Bajío, which is located in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico, is one of two UIW campuses in Mexico with the other being located in Mexico City.
In 2017, the inaugural First-Generation Celebration was hosted by the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and FirstGen Forward (FGF, formerly the Center for First-generation Student Success) in an effort to “raise awareness of the first-generation college student identity” (firstgenforward.org). Since then, other institutions across the country have joined the celebration, uplifting their own first-generation students as they strive to be the first in their families to complete a four-year college or university degree.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) Athletics program boasts a proud history shaped by countless dedicated individuals who believed in its potential to make a lasting impact on student-athletes and supporters alike. Today, UIW Athletics encompasses 14 sports and 23 men’s and women’s teams, standing as the only Catholic NCAA Division I athletics program in the Southland Conference. As the program continues to grow and reach new heights, it is only fitting that UIW honors the remarkable individuals who have contributed to its success through its prestigious Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Homecoming at the University of the Incarnate Word is a time that showcases the full extent of its community. Whether Crusaders or Cardinals, students or staff all members of the Incarnate Word family returned to campus to celebrate Homecoming 2025.
This weekend, the Catholic community will observe All Saints’ Day on Saturday, Nov 1 and All Souls’ Day on Sunday, Nov. 2. These sacred days are dedicated to honoring all the saints present in the Catholic faith and the souls of departed loved ones who have entered eternal rest. For many, these days allow people to grow stronger in their faith, process the complexity of loss and recognize the sacred gift of life.
On Wednesday, Oct. 29, the University of the Incarnate Word hosted its annual Peace Day event, which promotes the bible’s central concepts of peace and justice. In 1986, Incarnated Word began hosting peace fairs, in which the institution’s peace pole monument was planted in honor of UIW launching its Master of Arts degree in Peace and Justice. Since then, these peace fairs have evolved into an entire month of events exploring how to create peace for all during the month of October, including the yearly hosting of Peace Day.
On Friday, Sept. 19, UIW hosted the 20th annual Meet the Mission, sponsored by Mission and Ministry. Students, faculty, staff and more participated in a variety of service activities both on and off campus, hoping to serve both UIW and the greater San Antonio community. One of these service activities included the repainting of UIW’s LEED Platinum Solar House.
On Friday, Oct. 24, members of various UIW student organizations participated in the annual Light the Way Display Board Contest on the Broadway campus. This festive event invites students to get into the holiday spirit early as they decorate boards that will be displayed at the 39th Light the Way Holiday Festival on Saturday, Nov. 22. On the day of UIW’s annual holiday celebration, the boards will be displayed across the Broadway campus, showcasing the creativity of UIW’s Cardinal community.
For many UIW students, both past and present, UIW’s campuses serve as second homes that support their respective academic pursuits and dreams. Many leave UIW having made strong and lasting friendships, understanding what it means to be a part of the Incarnate Word family. However, some Cardinals have the fortunate experience of entering the Nest alongside family members and friends.
On Tuesday, Oct. 14, Campus Bajío celebrated its 10th Anniversary by hosting a gala on its beautiful campus in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico. The gala brought together students, faculty, staff, Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, local dignitaries and many supporters to celebrate the community and all that has been accomplished since its establishment on June 2, 2015.

On Friday, Oct. 10, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) renamed the Broadway Campus’ Student Engagement Center (SEC) Ballroom the Joeris Ballroom in honor of its cherished partners and friends, Maria Antonietta and Gary Joeris. Gary Joeris is the chairman and CEO of Joeris General Contractors and former UIW Trustee, who recently committed a generous gift of $500,000 toward the construction of Founders Hall.

The Liza and Jack Lewis Center of the Americas welcomed Duque Márquez as their latest speaker who presented on the promise of cross-border cooperation and humanistic leadership in the Americas as part of their “Leaders of the Americas Speaker Series.”
The Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions (SNHP) at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is honored to welcome Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, LL (AAN) as this year’s featured speaker for the annual Sr. Charles Marie Frank Endowed Lecture. Dr. Watson will present a lecture entitled “Unitary Caring Science: A Full Circle of Knowledge” at the UIW McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 5 p.m.
October 6, 2025 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that students participating in the Communication Arts Department UIWtv program garnered an impressive 14 Lone Star EMMY Student Production Awards nominations. That number by far exceeds every university in the state this year.
On Wednesday, Oct. 1, students from the Doctor of Occupational Therapy (DOT) and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs from SRS were joined by Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students from St. Philip’s College and Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) students from Concorde Career College on the UIW Broadway Campus for a Rehab Team Event. The day offered a variety of activities for students to participate in, educating and challenging them on how to best approach patient care in the field.
Last year, UIW announced the Dreeben School of Education’s recognition as a Charles Butt Foundation partner program. This year, the second cohort of Charles Butt Scholars is comprised of eight students, including three returning students and five new scholars.

September 22, 2025 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that the UIW Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry program has been granted continued approval by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Committee on Professional Training (CPT) following the program’s 2025 periodic review. The ACS approval is the national standard of excellence for chemistry programs, affirming UIW’s commitment to providing students with high-quality preparation for careers in science, medicine, industry and education.
September 19, 2025 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that it has been recognized as one of the best universities to work for in the nation according to a new survey by the “Great Colleges to Work For” program. This marks the 17th consecutive year that UIW has made the national list. The results of the “Great Colleges to Work For” survey are collected by the independent company Modern Think and released today in a special insert of The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Each year, from September 15 to October 15, the United States observes Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the history, culture and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino community that have helped shape—and continue to shape—the nation. In celebration, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has planned a variety of engaging events. These gatherings provide opportunities for the community to experience and embrace the vibrant tapestry of Hispanic and Latino cultures across UIW campuses (uiw.edu).
On Sunday, Sept. 14, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), in collaboration with the Interfaith San Antonio Alliance (ISAA), hosted the 2nd annual Festival of Faiths on the Broadway campus. This unique event welcomed hundreds of people to both share and learn about the various faith systems present in the San Antonio community.

On Thursday, Aug. 4, UIW’s Behavioral Health Services hosted its “Taco-bout Mental Health” event in honor of Suicide Awareness Month on the Broadway Campus. The annual event presents an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members to become more knowledgeable about aspects related to mental health while simultaneously enjoying delicious street tacos provided by local food truck Tacos al Cabron Cabron.
Every year, the University of the Incarnate Word’s Broadway campus transforms into a winter wonderland during its much-anticipated Light the Way Holiday Festival. This annual event invites thousands of San Antonio residents to experience the “millions of twinkling lights” that illuminate the campus, ushering the joyous Christmas season. However, this event wouldn’t be possible without the help of UIW student volunteers.
On Saturday, Aug. 6, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) honored the Class of 2029 at their annual White Coat Ceremony at the Boeing Tech Port. This ceremony signifies the beginning of student doctors’ academic journeys at UIWSOM. As they progress through the next four years of their education, they will grow into the next generation of exemplary health professionals who will heal their neighbors.
Welcome Week on the UIW Broadway campus is an exciting opportunity to greet new and returning students as a new academic year begins. Throughout the week of Monday, Aug. 25 to Saturday, Aug. 30, various engaging events are coordinated for students to enjoy as they embrace their Cardinal pride.
On Tuesday, Sept. 2, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) unveiled an exciting new addition. A 55-kW solar system was installed on top of the Brooks campus library in an effort to provide renewable energy to the UIWSOM campus. This project was executed with the collaboration of UIW’s Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) and Big Sun Solar, a company that “helps companies, nonprofits and municipalities with facilities in Texas meet carbon reduction goals and gain financial returns by transitioning to solar energy.”
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is advancing its commitment to sustainability with the commissioning of a new rooftop solar system on its UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine library at Brooks. The installation, completed by San Antonio-based Big Sun Solar, is expected to generate more than 81,982 kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually, offsetting nearly 8% of the library’s electricity use.
On Friday, Aug. 8, the UIW Feik School of Pharmacy (FSOP) hosted it’s 20th White Coat Ceremony in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. This annual event celebrates first-year pharmacy students who are embarking on their journeys to become the best quality pharmacy professionals who will one day serve others in need.
The start of a new academic year ushers in an exciting time on all of our UIW campuses, but particularly here on the UIW Broadway campus as new and returning Cardinals flock to the Nest as residents. On Thursday, Aug. 21 through Sunday, Aug. 24, the campus experienced one of its largest anticipated move-ins with approximately 1,175 students choosing to call UIW their “home away from home.”
Since opening in 2013, the UIW Bowden Eye Care and Health Center has served as a “multidisciplinary teaching environment equipped to provide comprehensive health care to underserved populations of our community.” Additionally, the UIW Eye Institute, located at the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO), is a state-of-the-art clinic equipped with some of the most advanced imaging technology for diagnosing eye disease (optometry.uiw.edu). Generations of ocular professionals have been prepared to serve the community at RSO and its affiliates facilities, and this academic year is no different.
This month, Enrique Gómez Jackson ’25 was recognized as the first-place winner for Viasat’s 2025 Space for Good challenge. Viasat, a global technology company specializing in satellite communications, launched their Space for Good challenge welcoming students to pitch projects that seek to “tackle real-world space sustainability problems” for the chance to win cash prizes to fund their idea (viasat.springpod.com). Jackson was one of this year’s many participating applicants, yet it was ultimately his idea that won. The stellar concept, a smart bracelet that helps locate, identify and save lives of those involved in natural disasters, received top recognition and $15,000 in funding.
The goal for Mariana Barron Esper, BA '19, no matter where life takes her, is to evoke peace, love and faith in the people she comes across. Her primary vessel for doing so is her music, which has been nominated for the International Catholic Music Awards, presented by the Vatican.
Much like UIW, many families take pride in the core values that guide their homes and communities. They raise their children with the hope that these principles will be passed down and lived out, just as they have been before. For Marissa Watters, a 2020 and 2022 UIW alumna, these values have been a constant compass, shaping the path that has led her to where she is today.
Music, whether intentionally or unintentionally, constantly influences the rich tapestry of our human experience – especially our memories and emotions. It can be enriching or distracting, with the ability to shape our beliefs about God, the Church and society.

Harrison is a Professor of Management in the H-E-B School of Business and Administration (HEBSBA) at UIW. August 13, 2025 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to welcome Tila K. Jernigan to the role of Senior Director of Military and Veterans Affairs. Jernigan brings over 20 years of dedicated service to the military-connected community, including 13 years in higher education. A military spouse herself, she brings both personal insight and professional leadership to her new role at UIW.
The Broadway campus falls silent during the summer season as Cardinals have flocked back home to relax and recharge for their summer vacations. Although students have yet to return to the Nest for the new academic year, the UIW Admissions team has been hard at work welcoming UIW’s latest class of incoming students – the Graduating Class of 2029.
After years of development and accreditation, the institution’s science program has now evolved into the University of the Incarnate Word’s School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering (SMSE). One of SMSE’s remarkable students is senior Mechatronics Engineering major Gabriella “Gabby” Luna.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce Dr. Adam Watkins’ promotion to Dean of the School of Media and Design. Watkins served as Assistant Dean there for the past three years and joined UIW in 2000.
August 4, 2025 - This fall, the University of the Incarnate Word School of Professional Studies (UIW SPS) will launch “Cognitive Bias and Applied Decision Making in Healthcare” and “Cognitive Bias and Applied Decision Making in Artificial Intelligence,” two new continuing education courses designed to help professionals recognize and respond to the hidden forces shaping clinical decisions and system outcomes.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded UIW a federal TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grant totaling more than $1.4 million. The grant will be used over the next five years to improve college retention and graduation rates among low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities.
On Monday, July 21, a celebration was held in honor of launching the first paid internship program between UIW’s Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions (SNHP) and the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Heath System. The vision of the UIW-CHRISTUS paid nursing internship program is to simultaneously prepare nursing students for real-world excellence, while deepening the mission-driven partnership between UIW and CHRISTUS.
This July, graduating Cardenales from UIW Campus Bajío in Irapuato, Guanajuato and Centro Universitario Incarnate Word in Mexico City were celebrated with beloved traditions at the campuses’ Spring 2025 commencement ceremonies.

Dr. Veronica Martinez-Acosta, professor of Biology, was recently recognized by the Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native American Scientists (SACNAS) as their 2024 Outstanding College/University Mentor. SACNAS is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans be successful in the world of STEM.
